Natural Hangover Cures

It happens… we all overindulge once and a while. Instead of popping an Advil and feeling sorry for your nauseous self all day, I have solutions to make the morning after much more tolerable. What better way to kick off 2017 by freshening up with these 8 natural hangover remedies guaranteed to work! Happy new year!

  1. Coconut water
My #1 go-t0… this is mother nature’s gift for hungover people! I love coconut water because not only does it rehydrate hungover skin but it is also is filled with the electrolytes, potassium and anti-oxidants that were depleted from a night of drinking. Coconut water is a much better fluid alternative to coffee or jus in the morning and is super refreshing!
  2. Turmeric
Take two of these capsules at night at the pre-party and/or the morning post-party and it can work miracles. Alcohol (especially in high quantities) causes free-radical damage in your body and turmeric is a great anti-oxidant to help you recover. Turmeric is also an amazing anti-inflammatory, so if you are feeling puffy after a night out… this spice should be your best friend! Even better, the byproduct that builds up in your body from alcohol is called acetaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen, and turmeric just so happens to have anti-cancer properties.
  3. Bananas
Swap the greasy bacon (that will make you feel even worse) for bananas. These are rich in minerals and potassium which are severely depleted as your liver’s enzymes works on metabolizing the booze you drink. I also love bananas because they are easy to digest and settle your stomach if your tummy needs some calming down.
  4. Activated Charcoal
This black stuff really helps me feel good whenever I’m sick. I take it on all my vacations and it’s really handy for diarrhea, vomiting and hangovers. It soaks up those nasty toxins from the drinks you had the night before and it basically helps your body to stop freaking out! As a bonus, it absorbs gas so will help you feel less bloated!
  5. B-Complex
I love taking my B vitamins every morning but they are extra helpful if your body desperately needs a replenishment, like in the case of a hangover! Your liver uses a machine called alcohol dehydrogenase to metabolize alcohol. This machine and the metabolizing pathway uses up vitamin B1 (thiamin), B9 (folic acid) and B12 as it works. After a long night of work, this process basically steals all of your B vitamin storage and makes you feel super fatigue, weak, light-headed, and can even make you feel depressed. Take a B vitamin supplement or even better… go get a hangover IV therapy treatment at your naturopath’s office (those baggies are FILLED with B vitamins! The treatment works instantly going directly into your blood stream without having to pass your liver first like a supplement does).
  6. Nux Vomica
This is a homeopathic treatment that I always have on hand as my holiday remedy! After birthdays, Christmas, New Years, etc. when it’s common to overindulge in too much food and wine… nux vomica always saves me the next day. I use the 30 CH dosage and put three pellets into my water every 3 hours the day after and it really makes a difference. This also encourages me to stay hydrated having to drink more water! Ask your naturopath about homeopathy and it just might work for you.
  7. Peppermint Halo
If you don’t have this product by Sage yet… you must! I also bought a similar product containing peppermint oil in Bali. Anytime I have a headache, I just roll it over the crown of my head at the hairline. It feels so refreshing and really helps soothe pressure and pain. It’s also great to use at the first signs of a migraine coming on. You can also just put peppermint oil into a diffuser… I love how it opens up your sinuses too.
  8. Protein Smoothie
The fabulous four ingredients to cure a hangover all in one easy drink: protein, coconut water, antioxidant and vitamins from berries and a high dose of minerals like potassium from banana. Try it and make sure it’s icy cold for an instant pick-me-up!

Feel better, friends!
